Which Ford Vehicles Can Be Flat-Towed?

Ford Flat Tow

Driving an RV around Columbia and beyond can be exhausting and frustrating. Finding parking can be difficult if you don’t have your Ford vehicle with you, and making quick runs from the campsite to the store is a different story. If you’re a Ford owner and also happen to be an RV owner, maybe you’ve considered taking your vehicle along for the ride to make things easier. To do that, you’ll need to know if your Ford can be flat-towed. What is flat-towing, and can you flat-tow your Ford vehicle? In the following guide, Joe Machens Capital City Ford breaks down the definition of flat-towing, and reviews what Ford models can be flat-towed for your next camping trip.

What is Flat-Towing (Four-Wheel Towing)?

Chances are, you’ve probably already heard of flat towing before. Flat towing goes by several different names: neutral towing, dinghy towing, four-wheel towing. So, what exactly is dinghy towing/flat towing, and why do people do it? Flat towing is a type of towing that pulls a vehicle behind another, with the towed vehicle having all four wheels on the ground, hence “four-wheel towing.” This type of towing is done often with an RV, and is a convenient way to bring your car along with you for camping trips. Dinghy towing is the opposite of trailering, where the towed vehicle only has two wheels in contact with the road. Flat towing is easier as heavy equipment such as a tow dolly or a trailer isn’t necessary. However, not every Ford vehicle can be flat towed on Fulton roads, so it’s crucial to know if your vehicle is capable of dinghy towing to avoid damage to your vehicle.
